NCSM: Breast cancer tops all others in M’sia
Statistics show that 5% of women will get breast cancer in Malaysia.
PETALING JAYA: The National Cancer Society of Malaysia said research shows that over 5% of women will develop breast cancer in Malaysia.
Speaking exclusively to FMT, Dr Saunthari Somasundaram from NCSM explained, “The peak incidence appeared to be 50–59 years old while 60% of breast cancer occurs in women between the ages of 30-59 years old, with higher peaks after 40 years.”
Saying early detection was crucial, Dr Saunthari explained, “The best methods to detect the cancer early are mammograms and a combination of self and clinical breast exams.”
She also said that girls as young as 16 should start being aware about their breasts and the benefits of early breast cancer detection.
“Certainly when you get into the 20s and 30s, these young women should be doing not only monthly self-breast exams but also going every few years, depending on their risk, to their health professionals for a clinical breast exam,” Dr. Saunthari advised.
Placing importance on early breast cancer detection, Dr Saunthari said NCSM was constantly looking for innovative ways in which to bring the message of breast cancer awareness to the target groups around the country.
“It is important for communities to join the fight and make a difference,” she explained.
She also said leading a healthy lifestyle from a young age was one way to keep breast cancer at bay.
“Choose a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grains and nuts,” she advised.
Watching one’s weight, exercising and keeping alcohol down to a minimum were also other helpful tips as was refraining from smoking.
Pink Unity President and breast cancer survivor, Salmah Mohd Yunus said that her instincts led to early detection which saved her life.
Salmah explains, ”Although I had cancer I consider myself blessed because I detected cancer early, I reacted immediately and I had it treated quickly.”
With October being Breast Cancer awareness month, NCSM together with American Association Malaysia (AAM) is holding a cancer benefit to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer at the Ritz-Carlton today.
Meanwhile a special workshop called ABC will be held for 25 advanced breast cancer patients or survivors as well as 25 caregivers and is slated for October 18 at the Resource & Wellness Centre of NCSM.
